Lo Lo’s Chicken and Waffles

You all know I love to cook, and most of the time I’d really rather stay home for a terrific meal instead of going out. But sometimes… that just doesn’t make sense. For a long time, I’ve been wanting to make the trek to Lo Lo’s Chicken and Waffles – and I got to last night. I think the first time I heard about the place was when Charles Barkley was talking about it a few years ago. What took me so long?

Lo Lo is the grandson of Mrs. White, and icon in downtown Phoenix where she has the Golden Rule Cafe (truly, you are on your honor to pay the correct amount for your meal). Lo Lo learned much of his magic under her guidance, and has branched out over the last several years to create his own magic.

When I was given the choice about where to go for my birthday dinner, this was one of the ideas on offer. I snapped up the suggestion, so off we went.

So, now, on to the food. It was my first time there – so of course, I had (HAD) to have Chicken and Waffles. There are plenty more items on the menu, too. As I was leaving (so full, I could hardly move!), I was already planning my next visit… a piece of chicken, a piece of catfish, some cheese grits and cornbread.

But I went ahead and ordered my two pieces of chicken and a waffle, along with a side of mac & cheese. I couldn’t resist! It was my birthday! I’m already trying to figure out when I go next. I honestly can’t remember the last meal I had where I could still taste the food (in a good way!) the next day! A terrific food memory! No room for dessert… our server had a great suggestion for next time – order it early – to go!

It’s been a really, really long time since I made fried chicken at home. There was a time when it wasn’t unusual, and I’d experiment with making different types – and it was really good. But, now I have to say, I’m happy to pay a visit to Lo Lo’s to get my fix, because it’s all that. Of course, now I’m left with planning my next visit. Hopefully my brother’s flight will be on time, ’cause I know where we’re stopping on the way back home!
